What Is WITS: What Is The Scripture?
WITS: What Is The Scripture is a fast-paced, faith-based card game that challenges players to combine Bible knowledge with quick creative thinking. Players choose a Bible character, find a scripture reference, and then race against a 45-second sand timer to construct a sentence using randomly drawn letter cards. It is part of the acclaimed WITS game family from SFM International, creator of the award-winning WITS: What Is The Sentence.
The game instructions are laid out like a church bulletin, a distinctive detail that immediately signals the warm, faith-centered spirit of the game. Whether you are sitting around a table at Sunday School, gathering at a Bible college, or playing with family on a weeknight, WITS: What Is The Scripture turns scripture study into a lively, competitive, and deeply rewarding experience.
As TTPM Toy Reviews put it: "Winning this game might not make you a saint, but it will prove that you read your Bible a lot."
How to Play WITS: What Is The Scripture
The game elegantly fuses two distinct gameplay layers: a Bible knowledge challenge and a letter-card sentence-building race. Here is a full breakdown of how a round works.
Step 1: Choose Your Bible Character
Each player selects a character from the included Character List or chooses any other Bible character they know. This choice anchors the round in scripture from the very start.
Step 2: Find the Scripture Reference
Each player has 45 seconds to tell the other players about their chosen character and locate the scripture reference in their Bible. Successfully doing this earns 5 points. This step alone makes the game an active Bible-reading exercise, rewarding players who know their scriptures well enough to find them quickly.
Step 3: Draw Your Letter Cards
Now the letter-card challenge begins. Pull a card from the Pull Deck. This determines how many Consonant cards will be dealt to you. You receive those Consonant cards face down, plus one Vowel card also placed face down.
Step 4: Draw an Action Card
Each player draws one Action card and reads its instructions aloud. Action cards define the rules for your sentence in that round. Some Action cards include bonus actions that allow players to earn additional points beyond the standard scoring.
Step 5: Race the Timer
Flip over all your letter cards. The 45-second sand timer starts the moment the last card is revealed. You must now construct a sentence related to the Bible in which words begin with the letters shown on your cards.
Here is the key scoring rule: you only need to use one letter to start a word in your sentence, but the more letter cards you incorporate, the higher your score. Every letter card displays its point value in the corners, so strategic players will aim to use as many cards as possible within the time limit.
Step 6: The Scripture Challenge
After you deliver your sentence, the other players can ask: "What Is The Scripture?" If you can state an appropriate scripture passage that applies to your sentence, you earn extra points. If you cannot, any other player at the table may attempt to claim those points by providing the scripture themselves.
This mechanic is the heart of the game. It rewards deep Bible literacy while creating genuine tension and opportunity for every player at the table.
Winning
Players accumulate points across rounds through scripture references, letter card usage, Action card bonuses, and successful scripture challenges. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
