What Is W.I.T.S?
W.I.T.S: What Is The Sentence is a fast-paced, award-winning word game that challenges players to construct a complete, valid sentence using a set of letter cards, all before the timer runs out. Simple to learn but endlessly replayable, W.I.T.S is the game that turns language into an exciting race against the clock.
Pick up your letters, flip the timer, and ask yourself: What Is The Sentence?
How to Play W.I.T.S
W.I.T.S is elegantly simple in concept and deeply challenging in practice. Here’s how a full game works:
What’s in the Box
-
3 sets of color-coded letter cards: Blue Vowel Cards, Green Consonant Cards, and Red Action Cards
-
4 hourglass timers in 15-second, 30-second, 45-second, and 60-second denominations
-
1 die
-
Steal cards for competitive gameplay
Setup
One player is appointed the Card Guard. This player keeps the Consonant, Vowel, and Steal cards shuffled and returns used Action cards to the bottom of the deck. The Card Guard also keeps time and tracks the score.
Gameplay — Round by Round
-
The active player rolls the die. The number rolled determines how many Consonant cards they will draw — and also how much time they will have to construct their sentence.
-
The player draws the indicated number of Consonant cards and one Vowel card. All cards are placed face down on the table.
-
The player draws one Action card and reads its sentence-construction instructions aloud. The Action card adds a creative twist to the round — perhaps requiring a specific sentence type, theme, or structure.
-
All letter cards are flipped face up simultaneously. The timer begins the moment the last card is revealed.
-
The player must create a sentence in which every word begins with one of the letters shown on the cards. All drawn letters must be used — and only those letters.
-
Before the timer expires, the player declares their sentence aloud: “What Is The Sentence?” followed by their completed sentence.
-
The other players vote on whether the sentence is valid. If approved, the sentence creator earns the points displayed on each Vowel and Consonant card.
The Steal Mechanic — Competitive Tension at Its Best
One of W.I.T.S’ most exciting features is the Steal system. At any point during the active player’s turn, any other player can play a Steal card. If the active player fails to produce a valid sentence in time — or if their sentence is ruled invalid — the Stealer has 15 seconds to create their own sentence using the same letter cards.
Succeed as a Stealer: Collect all the points from that round.
Fail as a Stealer: Those points are deducted from your score. Risk and reward in every round.
Winning the Game
The first player to accumulate 100 points wins. With the variable timer, the steal mechanic, and the randomness of letter draws, no two games ever play out the same way.
